Cape Fear Fair Tax would like to thank Thom Goolsby for attending our meeting. Thom is a conservative candidate running for the North Carolina Senate. Our group encourages any candidate to attend our meetings and join our group in discussing tax reform.
In the 1760’s and early 1770’s American colonists used the expression “Taxation without Representation” to express there resentment with the British government taxing them without the colonists having anyone to represent their interests in Great Britain.I have decided to put a little twist on the famous phrase to show my resentment towards our current situation in the United States.“Reception without Contribution”.Today in the United States we have a rampant problem with illegal immigration, each year it is estimated that over 350,000 illegal immigrants enter the United States adding to the estimated total of 12 million illegal immigrants already here. Now my issue isn’t with the illegal immigration policy we have in place at the moment, that’s for another discussion, my problem is with the implications on federal funds that this illegal immigration problem presents. With an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in this country and that number rising drastically each year, we have a growing segment of our country who does not contribute to our annual tax base. The estimated cost of these 12 million illegal immigrants is $10.4 billion a year. This presents a problem in two ways; one, we need their contributions due to the enormous deficit our government has placed us in and two, this same contingent is collecting funds either through welfare, Medicare, or other social programs implement by state or federal governments. This is absurd in the least. How can we allow this many people to take advantage of federal and state programs without contributing anything towards them?
One way to eliminate this absurdity is to pass tax reform like the FairTax.The FairTax with its move to tax collected on the purchase of new goods and services as opposed to payroll, income, capital gains, etc. taxes would bring this large contingent into the overall tax base, adding 12 million or more taxpayers to our annual federal tax revenue.Think about this addition, 12 million people who average $50,000 each in consumer spending equates to $600 billion in annual consumer spending, with the 23% consumption tax proposed by the FairTax legislation, that’s an extra $138 billion each year added to the federal tax revenue. That’s a net addition of $128 billion once you account for the $10.4 billion they will be illegally receiving through government programs. Can you imagine what this increase could do in helping with bringing down our national deficit? As long as we remove those in office who would rather spend it.Let’s end this problem of “Reception without Contribution”.
Our last meeting of the Cape Fear Fair Tax was absolutely huge, and for those who missed it, you missed a lot of great and interesting discussion. We first opened our meeting with Will Breazeale and Ilario Pantano, both running for North Carolina’s 7th congressional district. This meeting was actually the first time the two had crossed paths on the campaign trail and of course being that the two candidates were at a Fair Tax meeting it was expected they speak of the subject at hand. It was refreshing as a Fair Tax supporter to actually hear a candidate speak so highly of the Fair Tax and in the case of Will Breazeale to go so far as to say “I bleed Fair Tax” was inspiring. IIario Pantano spoke differently, admitting ignorance to the Fair Tax, but with a good attitude and with his Neal Boortz book in hand, stated he would learn more about it. Pantano would not advise at the time of the meeting if he would endorse the Fair Tax but he did ask a lot of questions and seemed genuinely intrigued. Local Fair Tax supporters have in the past had to go by with other state’s representatives speaking the Fair Tax’s praises, but not anymore. This is a good day to be in the North Carolina’s 7th Congressional District. There may be a day where we can be proud of our state’s representatives here in North Carolina, only time will tell.
More on the meeting, Joe and Karen spoke more on the issue of advertising and getting the word out about the Fair Tax on a local level. Ideas from running TV commercials to running ads in local publications were discussed. Joe stated that right now around 80-90% of the budget would be used for commercial advertising. This is an attempt to reach across to people not necessarily interested in politics and give the Fair Tax some face time in the local area, hopefully spawning interest and recognition when people see it on a national level.
Something that cannot be overlooked is the fact that you can become a living breathing Fair Tax commercial at little or no cost. Read the books and have a good general knowledge of the subject, know the criticisms and be able to counter them. Speak with others who you think would seem interested and even others that wouldn’t. Tax season is upon us use this time to start up a conversation with a co-worker, friend or family member. Use facebook and other social networking sites and don’t be afraid to speak out. Get out of your comfort zone and talk about it to others. This is how ideas like the Fair Tax start out as a grassroots movement and become a full blown national issue.
Our next Cape Fear Fair Tax meeting will be Wednesday, February 3rd, at 6:30 p.m. at McAllister’s Deli. Please try to get something to eat there as we get this room for free only if enough of our members order food - if not it’s a $50 fee for the room.
Also, please bring any information you have gathered on the subjects we discussed at the last meeting. If you need a reminder of what we discussed, please look at the post below. If you got a “Fair Tax: It’s Time” DVD last time and are able to make some copies, please bring those as well.
We will be discussing the information we have found on advertising/marketing, and how we can reach those fund-raising goals.
Thank you to everyone who came to the Cape Fear Fair Tax meeting last week - we had a good showing with quite a few new faces! I just wanted to re-cap what we went over, and to emphasise a few points.
Our main goals for 2010 are to make the Fair Tax a major issue on the State and Federal levels and to get Fair Tax supporters elected. The way to achieve this is to launch a local advertising campaign, and of course raise the funds needed to do so.
That sounds easy enough, right? Well, we’re going to need some major volunteer efforts in order to reach these goals. Below are specific things we need volunteers to do. If you’re able and willing to help out, please email back and let us know specifically what you’re going to do.
We need volunteers for:
Treasurer (includes keeping track of bank account, filing with IRS, member on board of directors)
Secretary (keep minutes of meetings, member on board of directors)
Web Master (keep web-site updated)
Event Planner (helps plan events for april 15th, political forums, fundraisers, etc.)
Researchers for marketing for: (reseach costs, target audiences, etc.)
Network TV
Cable TV
Radio
Internet
Direct Mailers
Free Marketing Ideas
College media outlets
Also, we need people to make copies of the DVD’s “Fair Tax, It’s Time” which were handed out at the meeting, and can also be found via you-tube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwuS9VCPmb0 .
We’d really like to get moving on our goals, and we need everybody’s help to move foward. If everyone commits to doing just one small thing, we can really move foward quickly and accomplish our goals!
If you go to Riverfest this weekend, don’t forget to stop by the Fair Tax Booth! Dedicated volunteers will be working at the booth handing out information to passers-by and spreading the word on the Fair Tax and Cape Fear Fair Tax. Hope to see you there!
Just some information for our “senior” Fair Tax Supporters, Since 60,0000 seniors are cancelling their membership with AARP, an alternative to AARP is “American Senior Association (ASA), www.americanseniors.org. They support the Fair Tax and have no minimum age requirement!
Our August Cape Fear Fair Tax Meeting will be held on August 24th at 6:30pm at McAllister’s Deli.
